Kedai Makan Soon Lai is famous in Batu Pahat which sells ‘Kuey Chap’, one of the Teo Chew food. In the 1950s, Soon Lai was started up with a roadside stall, but it moved to Jalan Fatimah in 1990s. Soon Lai had decades of history which about nearly 30 years and now the business had continued by the grandchildren of founder. Hence, it is a family business which had been operated by 3 generations.

What is ‘Kuey Chap’?  ‘Kuey Chap’ is the pieces made from rice flour and it is white in colour. It is likely same to ‘kuey teow’ but it is bigger than that and the shape is a rectangle.  When you taste it, you will realize it is soft and smooth. It is served with the herbal broth, it cooked and simmered for at least 3 hours and it is the recipe from family secret and the topping is full with fragrant fried shallots.

Kuey Chap’ can serve with other side dishes. In Soon Lai, it also has many side dishes for you to choose such as pork belly, lean pork meat, intestines, blood and kidney. But for the customer who does not like to eat these side dishes, Soon Lai also has the other side dishes such as fish balls, fish cake, pickled mustard green, egg and other.
